Pepe Mel: “Dépor is far too great to set ‘not relegating’ as the objective”

The blue-and-white coach, Pepe Mel, said that RC Deportivo “is far too great to set ‘not relegating’ as the objective”, therefore he urges “everyone to work” in order to “make the best Dépor possible”.

The Deportivista coach insisted “we owe the people. I don’t think one game covers the season. We have to draw out conclusions to not make the same mistakes in the future”.

Regarding the match against UD Las Palmas, Mel stated that “we wanted people to smile for a day. The team was intense, the players understood the way we could hurt Las Palmas”. “We may have played more or less, but the team was on form and has given everything”, he added.

He explained why the team played with ease against UD Las Palmas: “It was a pain having to play against a team that has the ball and keep it so much, when we had to prove everything we had said, that the stress of gaining points was weighing us down. Today we didn’t have that stress, therefore we had to prove we were right. It’s a pity we could only play like that today, without having to win points”.

Mel was straight to the point about what the future entails: “Dépor is far too great to set ‘not relegating’ as the objective. We’re all going to work for that, to make the best Dépor possible with the resources we have”.

The Deportivista coach also wished to explain what happened after achieving their stay in ‘Primera’ last week in the Estadio de la Cerámica: “We weren’t celebrating in Villarreal, Dépor cannot celebrate this season. We were celebrating taking a weight off our shoulders”.

Lastly, Mel informed that the team will play against Porto in the Estadio do Dragao on the 30th of July, where they will most probably spend a week in Portugal.

UD Las Palmas coach, Quique Setién, regretted that his team despite having the ball under their control practically throughout the whole match were “an inoffensive team” in their visit to Riazor: “The truth is we were really motivated for this match. The team was good in what they do well. The first goal we conceded was a pity. We had the ball under our control practically throughout the whole game. However, we were an inoffensive team in the end, and the four mistakes we made cost us hard”.
