Fabian Schär gave his first press conference as an RC Deportivo player in Abegondo this afternoon.

The Swiss defender stated, “when the people from Deportivo contacted me, they conveyed a lot of interest in me to come here. Therefore, I felt good coming here. I’m very happy to be here”.

Asked about what he knew of the Club, Schär said, “I know it’s a big Club with a lot of history. It had good moments, it won the league. I’m proud to be here and proud to play for these colours. I’m very excited to play in La Liga”.

However, he did acknowledge that “it’s not the same Deportivo from 10/15 years ago. But the Dépor has taken a step forward. And I’m here to help take that step forward. We’ll speak about the goals further on”.

After a fantastic season with Basilea and his national side, the new Deportivista defender explained that his experience in the Bundesliga “was a good year for the club, for Hoffenheim, but not for me. I was injured. I didn’t participate as much. But that's in the past. Now I must look ahead. I’m looking forward to playing in La Liga”.

Despite it being a World Cup season, Schär assured everyone that he is only thinking about Deportivo: “I’m thinking about playing here, I’m ready to play. The national team has difficult matches ahead to qualify for Russia. My mind is here and I’m looking forward to playing here”.

He does not fear the competition in his position, in fact, “every good club always has competition. I’m here to show the coach and the team that I want to play, I want to participate. If we all train well, the right ones will play".

He described himself as a defender that “likes to build up play from the back. The coach told me that that was what he was looking for. I liked the idea. I have a good first touch”.
