Álex Bergantiños: "We have what it takes to have done things better and we haven't"

Álex Bergantiños, one of Deportivo’s captains, spoke to the press in Abegondo this morning: “The group’s overall performance isn’t as we would like it to be nor as I think it should be. At the end of the day that’s what the standings prove. We’re there because of us. The fans don’t deserve another insufferable year, and least of all this season with the points that the teams below us have”.

He highlighted that “the league puts you in your place. We have what it takes to have done things better and we haven't”. Furthermore, he explained that “We have players to be better, but the group’s performance isn’t right and the standings put us in our place".

The Coruña midfielder insisted that “if we don’t recover our best group version, it’s going to be complicated to win a match from here to the end. The image we’re giving in the last games and the sensation of not being united, not being collectively strong, the team is fragile and it’s demonstrating it”.

He recalled that in Deportivo’s last away games, San Sebastián, Sevilla, Valencia, “the team was very fragile, conceding too many goals. We have good players, but if we’re not strong as a group, you won’t get many points in a league like the Spanish one. Everyone can see that”.

He believes it is fundamental “to recover the intensity we had when we changed the coach. We have to be that team again to get points from here to the end”.

Álex does not know if the team became more relaxed because the objective was near, but he did say, “Our level isn’t right, especially as a group. In the matches, we're not as cohesive as we should be. That’s reflected in the image we’re giving. The team isn’t compact, it’s not giving the image it gave when the coach changed”. “Collectively, we're not up to standard, and if we don’t row in the same direction in order to perform our best, it will reflect in our games”, he added.

He praised Deportivistas: “A Coruña has spectacular fans. Even throughout these difficult years with relegations, and suffering, they have always shown their loyalty to the Club. They are key for Deportivo. In this economically difficult moment for the Club, the fans are the foundation. The fans are impeccable both at home and away”.

Álex Bergantiños wishes for “the team to grow in the next seasons, for the team to have a better performance, better players to excite the fans, maintain their loyalty and make them look forward to coming to Riazor”.

Regarding Osasuna, this Sunday’s rival in El Sadar (12 pm, Bein Sports), he stated, “they have performed very well at home in the last matches, with young people, people who want to prove that they have what it takes to continue in the club next season. They beat Leganés, they nearly beat Sporting. It’s going to be an uncomfortable and very complicated game for us. They are a team that are very intense at home, they play long ball, and they are strong in defence. It’s going to be a difficult ground to play in”.
