Deportivo ABANCA and Athletic Club will be the highlight of the Women's 5th edition of the Teresa Herrera Trophy, that will take place on Saturday at the Estadio ABANCA-RIAZOR at 6 pm.

The Women's fifth edition of the Teresa Herrera Trophy consolidates it as one of the greatest tournaments of the summer, with matches that few can boast about, as Deportivo ABANCA, who has reinforced itself to try and climb to the Liga Iberdrola, receives the team that has won the Spanish championship the most times.

The Basque team is a classic side of women's Spanish football. Their coach is Joseba Agirre (former Athletic and Celta player, as well as other clubs), and they ended 5th in the 2016-2017 Liga Iberdrola with teams like Átletico de Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Levante ahead of them.

The team was founded in 2002 and has competed in the top-flight competition since then. They have won the league five times (2002-2003, 2003-2004, 2004-2005, 2006-2007 and 2015-2016). However, the Queen’s Cup has resisted the Basque side, who have disputed and lost two finals, in 2012 against Espanyol (1-2), and in 2014 against Barcelona (1-1, lost 4-5 in the penalty shootout).

Dépor ABANCA and Athletic Club have already faced each other. They both played the Aurrerá Tournament final last October in Vitoria, where the Basque ladies won 2-0.

The Women’s Teresa Herrera Trophy was first held in 2013 with a Coruña derby between Victoria and Orzán, in which Victoria won 3-0. On that occasion, the match was played at the Rodrigo García Vizoso ground in Grela 1.

Since then, the following three editions were played at Riazor. In 2014, Victoria beat Boavista 2-1 at the end of a football marathon that finished in the early hours of the morning.

The edition in 2015 already had the current format, with the women’s encounter as an overture to the men's match. On that occasion, Rayo Vallecano beat Victoria 7-0.

Last year Deportivo ABANCA had their debut and beat Villarreal 4-3 on penalties after finishing the match 2-2.

The Women’s Teresa Herrera Trophy Honours is as follows:

Year Champion Final res. Finalist
2013 Victoria CF 3-0 Orzán SD
2014 Victoria CF 2-1 Boavista
2015 Rayo Vallecano 7-0 Victoria CF
2016 Deportivo ABANCA 2-2 Villarreal CF
