A courageous Deportivo was harshly defeated in the Santiago Bernabéu today. Dépor gave an immense performance in the first half, and were able to overturn the scoreboard in the second. However they ended up succumbing to Real Madrid’s pressure.

For the first time this season, Gaizka Garitano repeated the first eleven. The Blue-and-whites started off with the same line-up as last Monday’s match against Real Sociedad.

During the first ten minutes, both teams disputed ball possession but lacked depth. From then on, both teams began to reach the rival’s area.

Raul Albentosa blocked a shot by Nacho and seconds later, Isco attempted a shot that went wide. After fifteen minutes, both Albentosa and Przemslaw Tytoń stopped Álvaro Morata from getting one in.

On the 29th minute, after Dépor had been momentarily dominating the game, Celso Borges nearly beat Keylor Navas who managed to clear the ball out of harm’s way. Yet, the referee believed it hit the post and awarded Real Madrid a goal kick.

On the 35th minute, Emre Çolak took a free-kick, which this time, really did end up hitting the woodwork after a bullet header by Celso Borges. The ball slowly flew across the goal line yet, Guilherme was unable to push it in.

The Blancos began dominating the last few minutes of the first half, but didn’t create any clear opportunities.

The second half began badly for Deportivo as Real Madrid took the lead with a goal by Álvaro Morata. However, Dépor turned the tables with 2 goals in 3 minutes.

The first goal saw Florin Andone battle it out with Casemiro to reach a through ball. After gaining advantage, Andone passed it to Carles Gil who in turn, connected with Joselu. The number 7 who had just come on, blasted the ball in the back of the net with his left foot.

A few seconds later, Andone dribbled the ball up the right wing and passed the ball to Joselu, who overtook Sergio Ramos to nip it in under Keylor Navas.

Madrid tried pressing, but was unable to create any opportunities in the following 15 minutes. Desperate, the Blancos began diving, asking for non-existent penalties, and protesting every action.

However, after a cross by Lucas Vázquez, Mariano was lucky enough to net it in.

Madrid’s third goal came from a corner kick taken by Toni Kroos which Ramos headered in.

Despite losing, Deportivo is out of the relegation zone for another week.
