Eibar-Dépor will be remembered for Francis’ debut

15/10/2017 14:10

Pepe Mel took a chance with Francis as the starting goalkeeper; a decision that will go down in the history books. The Nigerian goalkeeper is the youngest foreign player to play a LaLiga match (18 years and 352 days old), hence, Dépor has lined up the eldest player (Songo’o: 46 years and 67 days old) and the youngest. He is also the youngest foreign player in Dépor’s history to have defended #asnosascores (our colours) in Primera (ahead of Valverde and Scaloni), and the second youngest goalkeeper after Juan Acuña, who debuted when he was 18 years and 227 days old.

As well as including the debutant, Raul Albentosa also made his first appearance this season, and Florin Andone returned to the starting eleven up front.

The match went from better to worse. Dépor began really focused, moving the ball quickly and attacking along the wings with crosses by Juanfran and Luisinho, and with Fede Cartabia driving up the middle. In the 7th minute, Andone in a one-on-one, shot the ball at goalkeeper Dmitrović’s body wasting one of the best chances of the match.

Francis’ first intervention happened in the 12th minute as he cleared a Kike García missile. Eibar’s next attempt saw Sergi Enrich send the ball flying high into the stands, just like Valverde had been unable to aim the ball in the home side’s box.

In the 25th minute, Juanfran fired a low shot at the near post that Dmitrović blocked, right after a beautiful display of combination play between the entire Branquiazul attacking force.

After alternately dominating the match, the first ten minutes for the Branquiazuis, the next ten for Eibar, the match became a box-to-box affair with combination play from both sides, but neither created any real threats.

Andone managed to shoot in the 32nd minute after winning a duel with a local defender, but his shot went over the woodwork.

After the interval, Escalante’s thumping header in the first minute was saved by Francis.

The first and practically only chance Dépor had in the second half, came in the 67th minute with a Deportivista counter-attack that ended in Fede Valverde sending the ball into the stands. In the 73rd minute, Eibar had another attempt as Kike fired a low shot that Francis blocked with his body, and in the 80th minute he was forced to stretch down to deny Escalante’s shot.

The substitutes barely changed the panorama as the scoreboard reflects exactly what happened on the pitch.

With this result, the team has won 4 of the last 6 points played and keeps Dépor away from the relegation zone with fixtures still to be played.
