Juanfran: “We have to win, full-stop”

Juanfran was the centre of attention in Abegondo this morning.

The Deportivista right-back stated that despite Friday's win against Malaga, Deportivo will face Athletic Club this Saturday at San Mames (8:45 pm, Bein LaLiga), “with the same concern. We have to make a lot of points in the few matches we have left. We’re facing it with the same mindset, we have to win, full-stop.”

Hence, he believes that the match against the Basques “isn’t important, it’s extremely important. We have to win, there’s no other choice, especially with Levante’s run. They have our backs against the wall. We have to go out and win. There are 3 matches this week and we’re thinking about how to turn things around in these 3 matches. They also have complicated games.”

Nonetheless, he acknowledged that “it’s completely difficult. Whilst there are points, there’s hope. We have to go to Bilbao and win in order to carry on having a chance to save ourselves.”

According to the Branquiazul right-back, the math is simple: “Beat Athletic. If we don’t beat Athletic, there’s no point in doing the math. We have to win to carry on being hopeful and to narrow the distance because they (Levante) have complicated fixtures.”

If the team loses, it would not mean relegation “because mathematically we would still have possibilities. But we have to be realistic, we also have very complicated fixtures and it’s going to be difficult to win all of them. We have to beat Athletic because I think we can do it.”

Juanfran believes that “even though we found it hard to achieve that first win, we’re working really well with Clarence. We were finally rewarded. We have to carry on, carry on working and defending all together. Then in attack, the players we have up front are very good and have quality.”

Asked about the Chairman's presence (Tino Fernandez) in the dressing room at half-time last Friday, Juanfran stated, “when he feels like it, he is a person with many emotions, he tends to come down and give us a push or cheer us up. Not every game. But every now and again he comes down. At the end of the day there are some people that like it and some that don’t. In my opinion, anything that helps, supports us, or that someone thinks that it’s helpful, there’s no problem. We’re not in a position to reject any kind of help.”
