Mel: “We mustn’t be complacent. Our approach has to be aggressive”

This morning in Abegondo's press room, Pepe Mel corroborated the statement given by Tino Fernández yesterday: “Deportivo can do something more. We mustn’t be complacent with Deportivo de La Coruña not relegating every year suffering more or less, even though lately we’ve suffered too much. Our approach has to be aggressive”

For this reason, regarding his continuity in the Club, the coach agreed with the chairman: “As I know the chairman thinks the same, and I know the Sports Director thinks the same, I am hopeful and convinced of continuing here. I think we can do good things together. Good things are to reach this stage of the season and Dépor not being in the same situation again”.

He hopes that in Anoeta against Real Sociedad (12 pm, Bein Sports), “Dépor will have the same intensity as the rival we’re facing from the very first minute, because we know Real Sociedad are playing to get into Europe. We cannot trip up”.

Pepe Mel highlighted Real’s midfield: “For me, it’s one of the best in the league, with Xavi Prieto, Illara and Zurutuza. Then players who play well on the wings, the full-backs, Carlos Vela. It’s a complete team”.

The plan to get points is “to try and be stronger; we have to try and not let Real have a comfortable game. Edu is on the team sheet for the second time, a young lad; it’s good news for Dépor as I’m sure that he will be able to help the Club in the near future. We have to be strong away. We don’t have anything to win. We have to try not to let the games break”.

The Deportivista coach also stated that “for me, finishing third instead of fourth is not the same, finishing fourteenth instead of thirteenth is not the same, and it’s not the same finishing tenth instead of eleventh. In professional football everything adds up and everything takes away. And to top it all, since a little while ago, it means more or less money for Deportivo”.

Sunday is the beginning of a week with three matches in seven days, and Mel suggested there will changes: “We will use the squad starting from tomorrow, Wednesday, and then a very important match in El Sadar”.

Along these lines, he said “it’s the moment for those players who want to prove something, to do so. It’s been like that since day one. When I arrived, people like Laure, Álex Bergantiños, Mosquera and Fayçal Fajr were protagonists in the match against Atlético de Madrid”.
