Pepe Mel: “We lost, and we didn’t deserve this result”

Pepe Mel stated in Estadio ABANCA-RIAZOR’s press room that the match against Girona left “very bad sensations. We haven’t achieved anything. I don’t think it’s fair, but fairness in football doesn’t matter, what matters is the result. We lost, and we didn’t deserve this result. It’s what it is”.

Asked about Gil Manzano’s performance (the referee), he believes “we’re not having much luck. The penalty they gave Levante in Valencia stopped us from making two points. Honestly, today was a steep struggle with 0-1 from a penalty which I’m not even going to rate. That’s what you’re there for. We did enough in the second half, until 1-2, to not draw, to win. But we didn’t follow through. It's the typical match when nothing goes your way”.

He regretted Adrián’s right shoulder injury, which is going to be examined in the next few hours: “Everything's bad news”, he concluded.

Girona’s coach, Pablo Machín, stated that this triumph was “satisfying, not just for me, but for 90 per cent of the players I manage it’s a historic victory. Girona’s first away victory (in Primera Division)”.

He also said, “it supports what we’ve been doing, which is good work in many grounds. I’ll admit we’ve played better in other stadiums, that we showed we knew how to attack better. But in football you’re not rewarded when you want to be, but rather when your rivals allow you to or when you’re effective”.

Hence, “until 1-2 we weren’t the Girona we are able to be. But we must have done something right when we’ve made Dépor a little worse than what they were up until now. From 1-2 onwards, I saw the team with clear ideas, confidence, and we defended well”.
