Quique Gonzalez: “We have to focus on us”

Quique González spoke to the press ahead of Sunday's game against CD Lugo at the Abanca-Riazor (5:30pm).

After the only break of the season, he confessed he is “eager to get back to competing and gaining three points which are very important to uplift the team after a defeat. We’ve already done this and we must have character, without going crazy and doing everything we’ve done so far this season and see if we can be effective in both boxes. Nobody likes to lose 3-0, but this is football and second division. We must have character to give ourselves the boost and victory we need against Lugo, which will make everyone forget about it.”

According to the Branquiazul striker, CD Lugo is “a team that play very well. They scored 4 goals against Las Palmas who relegated this year, which shows you that any team can complicate things for you, therefore you have to do well in order to win. Everything will be in play in the second round; it's going to be much more difficult to obtain points, so we have to give a little more because we’re Deportivo and we have the ambition to play well and be up there.

Asked about Dépor being seen as the top contender by rivals, he stated “it doesn’t bother me, nor my teammates. We have to focus on us, on our daily work, in how we can harm the rival and make sure they don’t harm us and that’s what we have to think about. The football is what’s important, not what they say.” His current lack of goal scoring does not bother him either: “Football isn’t mathematics, we’re people, not machines. The best players in the world don’t score goals every day and they’re criticised. I try my best every week and I prepare myself for it but then things don’t go as well as one would like, but there’s no need to be melodramatic or go crazy. You have to be mentally cold and carry on working the same way. I’m happy but I want more.”
