RC Deportivo's coach, Pepe Mel, acknowledged that the team “weren’t in the game” in the first third, but he he defended their effort and character the rest of the match saying that “the draw was a fair reward”.

He went on to say “I think we didn’t interpret the first half very well or the scheme Betis was playing. We had spoken about it but things didn’t turn out well. I don’t think we were in the game in the first 25 minutes of the first half”.

“From then on, everything changed. Dépor were better in the second half and we obtained a fair reward. I really value the fact we never gave up with the result against us, we believed we could equalise and when we did, we even believed we could win”.

Mel recalled “we need to gain confidence and self-esteem. These three matches could give us that. We need to grow in other aspects”.

He also recalled that since his arrival, the team’s schedule has been two trainings, one match, two trainings, one match”.

Referring to the penalty, the Deportivista coach was straightforward: “It was very blatant”. He then listed the penalty takers in order: “First Celso, second Fajr, and the third Andone”.

Real Betis’ coach, Victor Sánchez del Amo, stated that “the referee’s decision has deprived us from getting three points”.

Asked about the penalty he replied, “I haven’t seen it but everyone says that there’s absolutely nothing to see”.
