Juanfran: “We all know that this year cannot be like last year”

Juanfran, one of Deportivo’s captains, spoke to the press in Abegondo this morning. He stated that last Sunday’s match against Real Sociedad at the Estadio ABANCA-RIAZOR proved “we have to be more compact from the very first minute; not wait until we receive the first blow”.

He mentioned that the changes Pepe Mel made during the match against the team from San Sebastián “were positions we had worked. Every player has trained in those positions, they know what they have to do in those positions. It’s something we spoke about and that we knew could happen. It didn’t catch us by surprise”.

The Deportivista right-back insisted that “nobody would talk about it if we had won. We lost and people focus on that a little. In a dead ball situation, it doesn’t matter if someone’s on the right, on the left, or as a striker. It’s a man-to-man marking set piece and that's that. We can’t give it that much importance because it has been rehearsed. It's not something new. Fede Valverde has trained in front of me sometimes, Adrián on the right and on the left, Lucas on the left and on the right. It’s all been rehearsed. Nothing suddenly happens in a match that the player says, ‘what's going on?’. We have rehearsed everything, spoken about it. Before the match we speak about what could happen. The anxiety is normal when things don’t work out”.

Along these lines, he maintained that the players “have a lot of responsibility because the Club has built an important project, they’ve spent a lot of money and they have made a clear statement with Lucas’ return. We all know that this year cannot be like last year”.

After 1 out of 9 possible points, he said that the dressing room “is down because things aren’t going the way they’re expected to. We're not playing great football, and spirits are down. It's true we have to be calm. This has just begun. There’s still time to improve which is important”.

For Juanfran, it is time to grow: “Finally, everyone who is going to be here, is here. We had to wait until the end to finish building the squad. Time to grow. This week is important because we have three games”.

He admitted he was expecting another start to the league regarding the style of play because “we came from having better vibes to what we're proving. We knew the first matches were very difficult because it was Real Madrid, Levante away is a complicated team, and Real Sociedad who are on top form in the league. We expected to be footballistically better”.

For this reason, he is expecting at the Benito Villamarín, against Betis on Saturday (6:30 pm, Bein LaLiga) “a victory that gives you confidence, that gives you peace of mind to work and to collect the reward of all the work we have done in the summer, and to start moving up”.
